Almost a week after its premiere in the Philippines, Thor: Ragnarok received a lot of positive reviews and conquered the Philippine box office with ₱201.56 million for the period of October 25-29. It is the biggest October Opening Weekend Ever in Philippine history. The movie is directed by Taika Waititi and the script by Craig Kyle & Christopher Yost, Stephany Folsom and Eric Pearson.
Thor: Ragnarok follows after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. In the film, After the death of his father, Odin, and losing his hammer against Hela, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe and finds himself in a planet full of wormholes ruled by the Grandmaster. He is taken as a gladiator to fight in the contest of champions against Hulk, his fellow Avenger. Thor must escape the alien planet Sakaar in order to save Asgard from Hela and to prevent Ragnarok.
Waititi's rendition of Thor is like a breath of fresh air and totally outshined 'Thor' and 'Thor: Dark World', Ragnarok can be considered the best and most fun among the 3 films. The technicolor visuals and soundtrack will leave you dazzled. Special effects and action scenes are also top-notch especially on the first and last part. What makes it different from the previous Thor films is that you'll laugh all through out and it's enjoyable to watch. But because of the film's charm and comedy, in some way it loses the seriousness of the story. Blanchett's portrayal of Hela is highly commendable but I wish I could've seen more of her back story because she just popped out suddenly. Minor characters managed to play their part and gave a little entertainment especially Korg.
Credit Scenes
The film includes only 2 credit scenes that are not quite amazing if you compare it from the previous MCU films. The mid credit scene goes back to the Asgard refugee ship where Thor and Loki are debating where they are heading next and most likely Midgard (Earth) is their only choice. Then a larger spaceship suddenly appeared in front of them and the scene ends. Although a sequel is not yet confirmed, it's quite possible to do a movie about J. Michael Straczynsk and Olivier Coipel's run on Thor wherein Asgard is floating above Broxton, Oklahoma. As for the spaceship that suddenly appeared at the end, it is possible that it is Thanos' fleet. Did Loki betrayed his brother once again and followed Thanos? I guess we need to wait until Infinity War hits the big screen.
The post credit scene was a little bit "meh" and it only shows what happened to the Grandmaster after the revolution in the planet Sakaar. The scene was although funny as it showed the quirkiness and comical side of Jeff Goldblum. Well I hope to see him once again together with the other Elders of the Universe like Benicio Del Toro’s the Collector.
Thor: Ragnarok is a type of movie perfect to watch during your Sunday afternoon and serves as your happy pill. Thank you Globe Telecom and Comics Club Philippines for the special screening! 8.5 / 10 :)
